Rob
Reiner Rob Reiner is a principal and cofounder of Castle Rock Entertainment. In addition to directing feature films, he is involved in all phases of Castle Rock's creative activities. Prior to his directorial debut, Reiner acted in many television and feature films, wrote for the Smothers Brothers, and became a household name for his Emmy Award winning portrayal of Michael Stivic, son-in-law of Archie Bunker in the hit series "All in the Family." Reiner's credits as a director of feature films include the critically acclaimed This is Spinal Tap, a parody "rockumentary" about a mythical heavy metal group; The Sure Thing, a love story about two college students reminiscent of the classic romantic comedies of the '30's; the sleeper box office success Stand By Me, about four boys coming of age in the '50's, for which he received Best Director nominations from the Directors Guild of America and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association; and The Princess Bride, a critically acclaimed and commercially successful picture adapted for the screen by Academy Award winner William Goldman from his original novel. Castle Rock Entertainment's first feature film release was Reiner's 1989 hit, When Harry Met Sally..., a chronicle of romance in the '80's. The film earned him once again Best Director nominations from both the Hollywood Foreign Press and the Directors Guild of America. He next directed Misery, a psychological thriller based on Stephen King's bestseller of the same title. Kathy Bates' performance in Misery brought her the 1990 Best Actress Oscar. The 1992 box office mega-hit A Few Good Men, starring Tom Cruise, Jack Nicholson and Demi Moore, was next, receiving four Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture. In 1994, North was released and starred Elijah Wood, Bruce Willis, Jon Lovitz, Jason Alexander and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. It was followed in 1995 by the hit comedy The American President, starring Michael Douglas and Annette Bening. In 1996, Reiner directed Alec Baldwin, Whoopi Goldberg and James Woods in Ghosts of Mississippi, the true story of young Mississippi District Attorney Bobby DeLaughter's tireless determination to bring to justice racist murderer Byron De la Beckwith, thirty years after his slaying of civil rights worker Medgar Evers. Aside from his work behind the camera, Reiner has continued to act, appearing in such films as Enter Laughing; Where's Poppa?; Bullets Over Broadway; Mixed Nuts; Postcards from the Edge; Bye Bye, Love; Sleepless in Seattle, and The First Wives Club. In April, 1997, Reiner, his wife Michele Singer Reiner, a professional photographer, and Ellen Gilbert of International Creative Management, joined forces on a humanitarian campaign to communicate the importance of the first three years of life. The "I Am Your Child" campaign was launched with a White House summit--hosted by President Clinton and the First Lady--on early brain development. On April 28, 1997, "I Am Your Child," an hour-long, prime-time special, aired on ABC-TV. Reiner co-produced, co-wrote and directed the show, which was hosted by Tom Hanks and starred Billy Crystal, Robin Williams, Rosie O'Donnell, Oprah Winfrey, Michael J. Fox, Roseanne, General Colin Powell, and the President and First Lady. The trio is focused on continuing the work of the "I Am Your Child" national public awareness and engagement campaign. So far, a website has been created and is up and running, a parenting video and CD-ROM will be released this summer, and Newsweek magazine has published a special issue dedicated to the topic. In addition, a six-governor, bipartisan task force has been assigned to develop state policies for very young children as a result of Reiner's recent address to the National Governors Association in February, 1997. Early next
year, an "I Am Your Child CEO Summit" will bring together top
Fortune 100 companies to discuss what corporations can do to support their
employees who are parents, and to contribute to the health and well-being
of the children in the communities where they do business. Reiner and his wife Michele have two children.
