Dr. Robert Lyman Potter


Dr. Robert Lyman Potter has divided his professional time among the demands of three areas: medical practice, medical education, and bioethics consultation.

Dr. Potter has practiced medicine in Kansas City, Kansas for the past 30 years, with an emphasis in long-term care. He graduated from the University of Kansas School of Medicine and is board certified in internal medicine and geriatrics. He is associate clinical professor of medicine for the University of Kansas School of Medicine and has contact with doctors in training on a daily basis in a community hospital. His clinical experience had been acknowledged through his election as Fellow of the American College of Physicians.

Dr. Potter also has a Ph.D. in the area of Religion and Psychological Studies with an emphasis in ethics from the University of Chicago Divinity School. This area of interest has drawn him into research, writing and teaching in the field of bioethics. He is the clinical ethics scholar for Midwest Bioethics Center, where he has been involved over the past 5 years in projects designed to analyze and resolve problematic issues in bioethics.

Dr. Potter travels widely for ethics consultation and programming with hospitals, long-term care facilities, professional organizations, physicians, nurses, and pastoral care groups.
