Katherine E. Heintz-Knowles Katherine E. Heintz-Knowles, Ph.D is Assistant Professor of Media Studies in the School of Communications at the University of Washington. She received her B.A. in Liberal Studies from the University of California at Santa Barbara and her Ph.D. in Communications Research from the University of Illinois. Her research specialty is in the uses and influences of media on American children and adolescents. Her recent publications include: "The Reflection on the Screen: Television's Image of Children" (1995) and "Television and Teen Sexuality" (1995). She regularly gives workshops to parents and children in the Seattle area about how to best use television, and is actively involved in promoting media education at the elementary, middle and high school levels. Dr. Heintz-Knowles is currently working on two projects. The first is a content analysis of the products, appeals and disclaimer information contained in advertising in children's publications. The second is an analysis of the relationship between college students' own television viewing habits as children and their expressed opinions regarding rule setting for their children's television viewing. Dr. Heintz-Knowles is the mother of two children and is expecting a third this fall.
