Jane Fonda

From acting, to health and fitness, to the worlds of politics -- no other contemporary American actress has been as honored or successful as Jane Fonda.

With two Oscars, five additional nominations, an Emmy and numerous other awards to her credit, her work has been recognized by every major film society.

She has built her "Jane Fonda Workout" business into a household word, turning her thirty year interest in health and fitness into remarkably successful and respectful enterprise.

In November, 1985, a Roper Poll for Ladies Home Journal listed her as the fourth most admired woman in America, and April, 1985 U.S. News & World Report/Roper Poll found her to be the top ranking heroine of Young Americans.

In her thirty year career, Ms. Fonda has starred in over forty films, including "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?", "Julia" and "Klute", for which she won her first Academy Award.

Jane Fonda has long been a citizen activist. She was a participant in the movement to end the war in Vietnam, and she has spoken widely on behalf of the environment and role of women in society. A particular concern of hers has been human rights abuses throughout the world, particularly the cause of Jewish refuseniks in the Soviet Union and the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa. She traveled to Poland in, 1987 to meet with Lech Walesa and express support for the then-outlawed Solidarity movement, and to Czechoslovakia and East Germany in 1989 to meet with the leaders of the emerging democracy movement there.

Her continuing international leadership and advocacy in the areas of population management and environmentalism led to her designation in 1993 by the United Nations as a Special Goodwill Ambassador to the U.N. Population Fund. She recently addressed the United Nations International Conference on Population and Development in Cairo on the importance of women's health programs, family planning and economic development in order to curb the world's population.

She was the director of the Laurel Springs Children's Camp for fifteen years, a summer program for children from a variety of backgrounds which used the performing arts to build self-esteem and cooperation. The camp was located on her ranch in the Santa Ynez Mountains above Santa Barbara.

Her "Jane Fonda's Workout" book was at the top of the best seller list for over two years, breaking publishing records. A second book, "Jane Fonda's Workout for Pregnancy, Birth and Recovery", by Femmy DeLyser, was also a best seller, as were, "Women Coming of Age", a comprehensive layperson's guide to aging and mid-life well-being, and "Jane Fonda's New Workout and Weight-Loss Program".

Her video exercise programs are phenomenal sellers which have outpaced all other programs on the market. Her original "Jane Fonda's Workout" tape was at the top of the chart for nearly four years, and is the top-grossing home video of all time, having sold over a million copies.

With her husband, Ted Turner, Ms. Fonda divides her time between Los Angeles, Atlanta and Montana. She has a daughter, Vanessa, 25 and a son, Troy, 21.
