Program Synopsis :
Tan Ux’il, a community-oriented grassroots NGO, was one of the first groups to receive a seed grant from PCI in 2005. Located in Pétan , Guatemala , Tan Ux’ilhas been working to improve the sexual and reproductive health of adolescents and youth since 2002.
PCI has been consistently impressed with the quality of Tan Ux’il’s work. The group’s engaging serial drama, La Rouletta: Donde las Emociones se Funden (The Roulette – Where Emotions Melt) is broadcast in the Department of Petén through National Radio Tikal , which has the widest coverage for the urban population, and in the Municipal of Poptún through the Radiodiffuser Interphase, which has wide coverage in rural areas. The show focuses on the sexual and reproductive health needs of youth.
Tan Ux’iluses the serial drama to educate youth on sexual and reproductive health and to promote the family planning products available at their pharmacy. The group has launched a broad-based social marketing campaign that targets a youth audience with posters, fliers and T-shirts. Tan Ux’ilhas also been offering “Emergency Pack Combos” (which include two condoms and one course of emergency contraception) at their local pharmacy.

2006 Evaluation Results
- During the first three months of the show, Tan Ux’il’s pharmacy saw 600 additional customer visits.
- Three months after starting broadcasts, Tan Ux’il’s pharmacy recorded a 70 percent increase of customers using the pill and condom for a three month total of 1409.
- Upon completion of the broadcasts Tan Ux’il has reached their goal of 2013 new and regular users of the pharmacy.
- 96% of users asked for condoms and 4 percent requested the pill. During the broadcasts 35 emergency contraception combo packages (EC pills and condoms) were distributed by the pharmacy and its peer educators.
