Honduras
With over 7.5 million inhabitants, unemployment and rural deforestation have been the main reason to mobilize young people to the urban areas. Adolescents’ pregnancy and HIV/AIDS are one of the main issues faced by this migrant population. According to UNPF, AIDS has become the leading cause of death among women of childbearing age in Honduras.
Honduras has the highest teenager fertility rate in Central America; 137 newborns for every 1.000 women between ages 15-19. Teenage pregnancy rate increased by 50% from 1987 to 2001. In addition, 70 per cent of the young people are living with HIV.
