Xing Part III:
“Live with Love”
PCI-Media Impact ’s Chinese television series Bai Xing (Ordinary
People) concludes with its third installment entitled “Live
with Love.” This final installment represents one of
the first dramatic series produced in China and broadcast
dealing with the issues surrounding HIV/AIDS.
The 20-episode series centers on an unfortunate AIDS infection
caused by a car accident and human error at the hospital.
Through these events, the story’s main characters learn
about HIV/AIDS, its rapid spread worldwide, and the basics
of prevention and treatment. The main message of the series
tackles the challenges brought about by the stigma against
those with the disease in local Chinese society. Using a
dramatic romance, the series strives to de-stigmatize the
disease by showing how accurate information, caring, understanding,
compassion and support benefit those living with HIV/AIDS.
The Broadcast Reach:
The series was first broadcast on Chinese television in
November and December 2005, and January 2006 using city-based
stations in: Anhui, Beijing, Chongqing, Fujian, Guangxi,
Gueizhou, Hebei, Heilongjiang, Henan, Inter-Mongolia, Jiangxi,
Jinlin, Shengyan, Nanjing, Shangdong, Shanghai, Tianjing,
Shangxi, and Yunnan. All together, these stations reach viewing
audiences exceeding 700 million people.
The Story:
The series opens with two fugitives, Xia Meng and Jin Hairong,
hire a taxi driven by our hero Hao Liande, an honest taxi
driver. Hao Liande intended to deliver them to the police.
While Hao Liande fights with his passengers, the car crashes
into a container truck. Several people are badly injured,
including: Lin Yidan, a middle school student, Su Lying,
a pregnant woman, Xia Meng, the female fugitive, and our
hero Hao Liande, the taxi driver.
While in the hospital for treatment, the four characters
in the accident are exposed to HIV-contaminated blood. For
a time, each of the characters believes they have been infected
with contaminated blood. This throws each into a desperate
situation facing untold misunderstandings and rejection by
their loved ones. Ultimately, only two characters, Lin Yidan
and Su Liying are infected with contaminated blood.
Before the accident, Hao Liande was preparing to marry Anyue,
his fiancé. Misunderstanding that he has AIDS, and
they split up for the sake of Anyue’s happiness. When
Hai Liande later learns he has not been infected, he tries
desperately to get her back, but the situation has changed,
and she is gone.
For Lin Yidan, the middle school student, his stepmother,
not only takes good care of him, but encourages and supports
him spiritually. After Lin Yidan’s infection, the family
battles internal conflict, meddling by Lin Yidan’s
birthmother and a heartbreaking divorce where Shen Ning leaves
Lin Yidan’s father.
Su Liying, the pregnant woman, was thrown out of her house
by her husband, who had planned to take away her newborn
baby. Our hero Hao Liande proposes to marry Su Liying after
falling in love with her. Su Liying rejects him after learning
she is infected, not wanting to involve him in “her
misfortune.” Now Hao Liande has been rejected twice
and the question becomes “will his find his true love?”
The young and beautiful Xia Ming, the fugitive, believes
at first she has been infected. It turns out to be a false
alarm, but, she is enlightened by the experience and desperately
tries to turn her life around. But, in the last harrowing
moments of the series, Jin Hairong brutally runs over her
with a car.
As the series closes, our hero, Hao Liande bravely battles
the evil fugitive and is stabbed and seriously injured
before bringing him to justice. Hao Liande is last seen gasping
for life, and it is unknown whether he lives or dies. The
last scene shows a calendar next to Lin Yidan’s bed,
having been turned 365 days.
Full of hope, tomorrow was waiting for him…
