China - Bai Xing Part III:
“Live with Love”

PCI-Media Impact ’s Chinese television series Bai Xing (Ordinary People) concludes with its third installment entitled “Live with Love.” This final installment represents one of the first dramatic series produced in China and broadcast dealing with the issues surrounding HIV/AIDS.

The 20-episode series centers on an unfortunate AIDS infection caused by a car accident and human error at the hospital. Through these events, the story’s main characters learn about HIV/AIDS, its rapid spread worldwide, and the basics of prevention and treatment. The main message of the series tackles the challenges brought about by the stigma against those with the disease in local Chinese society. Using a dramatic romance, the series strives to de-stigmatize the disease by showing how accurate information, caring, understanding, compassion and support benefit those living with HIV/AIDS.

The Broadcast Reach:

The series was first broadcast on Chinese television in November and December 2005, and January 2006 using city-based stations in: Anhui, Beijing, Chongqing, Fujian, Guangxi, Gueizhou, Hebei, Heilongjiang, Henan, Inter-Mongolia, Jiangxi, Jinlin, Shengyan, Nanjing, Shangdong, Shanghai, Tianjing, Shangxi, and Yunnan. All together, these stations reach viewing audiences exceeding 700 million people.

The Story:

The series opens with two fugitives, Xia Meng and Jin Hairong, hire a taxi driven by our hero Hao Liande, an honest taxi driver. Hao Liande intended to deliver them to the police. While Hao Liande fights with his passengers, the car crashes into a container truck. Several people are badly injured, including: Lin Yidan, a middle school student, Su Lying, a pregnant woman, Xia Meng, the female fugitive, and our hero Hao Liande, the taxi driver.

While in the hospital for treatment, the four characters in the accident are exposed to HIV-contaminated blood. For a time, each of the characters believes they have been infected with contaminated blood. This throws each into a desperate situation facing untold misunderstandings and rejection by their loved ones. Ultimately, only two characters, Lin Yidan and Su Liying are infected with contaminated blood.

Before the accident, Hao Liande was preparing to marry Anyue, his fiancé. Misunderstanding that he has AIDS, and they split up for the sake of Anyue’s happiness. When Hai Liande later learns he has not been infected, he tries desperately to get her back, but the situation has changed, and she is gone.

For Lin Yidan, the middle school student, his stepmother, not only takes good care of him, but encourages and supports him spiritually. After Lin Yidan’s infection, the family battles internal conflict, meddling by Lin Yidan’s birthmother and a heartbreaking divorce where Shen Ning leaves Lin Yidan’s father.

Su Liying, the pregnant woman, was thrown out of her house by her husband, who had planned to take away her newborn baby. Our hero Hao Liande proposes to marry Su Liying after falling in love with her. Su Liying rejects him after learning she is infected, not wanting to involve him in “her misfortune.” Now Hao Liande has been rejected twice and the question becomes “will his find his true love?”

The young and beautiful Xia Ming, the fugitive, believes at first she has been infected. It turns out to be a false alarm, but, she is enlightened by the experience and desperately tries to turn her life around. But, in the last harrowing moments of the series, Jin Hairong brutally runs over her with a car.

As the series closes, our hero, Hao Liande bravely battles the evil fugitive and is stabbed and seriously injured before bringing him to justice. Hao Liande is last seen gasping for life, and it is unknown whether he lives or dies. The last scene shows a calendar next to Lin Yidan’s bed, having been turned 365 days.

Full of hope, tomorrow was waiting for him…
