The Communication
Initiative
...global forces...local choices...critical
voices...telling stories...
PCI has joined with 16 other organizations
that form The Communication Initiative. The group’s
goals involve using communication as a tool to address development
issues in developing countries.
The Initiative provides a forum to debate
development communication issues and programs; improve strategic
communication analysis and action; support a stronger voice
for learning experiences; and promote the importance of communication
for development.
The other partners include: The Rockefeller
Foundation, BBC World Service Trust, The CHANGE Project, Canadian
International Development Agency, The European Union, Exchange,
Food & Agriculture Organization of the U.N., Johns Hopkins
University Center for Communication Programs, OneWorld, The
Panos Institute, Soul City, The Synergy Project, Joint U.N.
Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), U.N. Children’s Fund
(UNICEF), U.S. Agency for International Development, and the
World Health Organization.
“We are thrilled to be at the table with our colleagues
in the communication field,” says Kate Randolph, PCI’s
Vice President of International Programs. She represented
PCI at the partners meeting held November 6-7 at the Rockefeller
Foundation. “This group provides key leadership for
hundreds of
communication programs in developing countries around the
world.”
The Communication Initiative connects people
working in the international development community. Warren
Feek, the Initiative’s Director, says “Our electronic
magazine [The Drum Beat] and web site provide an opportunity
for interaction among a wide-ranging group of professionals
in the field. We want to facilitate dialogue and the sharing
of experiences to improve the relevance and effectiveness
of people’s work.”
