PCI Minidramas Reach
Mexico City Classrooms
Mexico’s Secretaría de Educación
Pública (Ministry of Education) is in talks with PCI
Mexico about using mini dramas from our teen radio show, Ombligos
al Sol (Bellybuttons to the Sun). The mini dramas would
be used to supplement classroom discussions of adolescent
issues in Mexico City’s high schools.
The 5-minute mini dramas will be distributed
to teachers on CD or cassette tapes along with questionnaires
designed to guide and evaluate discussions.
“The teachers will also be provided with research materials
we used in the production of the drama’s episodes,”
says María Almela, PCI’s Mexico representative
and the executive producer of Ombligos.
The episodes tackle a variety of topics
including drug abuse, adolescent pregnancy, sexually transmitted
diseases, HIV/AIDS, and adolescent sexuality. These important
subjects are woven into stories designed to speak to a teen
audience and to communicate important, if not life-saving,
information.
“For the PCI Mexican project, Ombligos
al Sol, it is a big step to have this agreement with
the Secretaría de Educación,” says Almela.
“This is a chance to work with the governmental educational
structure to reach a lot of young people and help them develop
healthy attitudes in confronting issues concerning sexuality,
drugs, domestic violence, etc.”
