On Reflection
Madagascar
A recent evaluation of Sarivolana
(Reflections of the Moon), the PCI-
supported soap opera in Madagascar, provides further evidence
that a radio serial drama can be an effective tool for education
and diffusion of health information.
Undertaken by the Madagascar Ministry of Health and with
financial assistance from the Dodwell Trust, a research team
discovered that over 80 percent of family planning clients
surveyed in Madagascar cited Sarivolana as their main source
of information on where to obtain family planning services.
Sarivolana was broadcast on Radio Nationale Malagasy, Madagascar’s
national radio station, from June 1997 through December 1999.
The program sensitized the public to the negative effects
of adolescent pregnancy and ill-spaced or unplanned pregnancy
on the health of mother and child.
